Duty of Care
A PSE Members Mindset Regarding Risk Management and Hazing Prevention
As in business, PSE leaders and members have a duty of care.
Put simply, having a duty of care means being responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of all active and prospective members. A PSE Members duty of care typically involves the following:
Providing and maintaining safe physical meetings and work/activity environments.
Ensuring compliance with appropriate fraternity and university standards and safety regulations.
Ensuring that members allocate an appropriate amount of time and attention to the fraternity without compromising academic success, work, health and personal relationships.
Conducting chapter activity risk assessments.
Protecting all students from discrimination, bullying and harassment.
Providing individuals with clear expectations detailing their responsibilities and limits of their roles.
Providing appropriate education and training.
Providing members with opportunities to raise concerns and offer feedback.
In this context, your duty of care leaves no room for events, activities, practices or traditions that have the potential to harm any student. Your demonstrated duty of care ensures continuity, maintains chapter morale, and supports member loyalty and retention. Show your members that you are taking proactive measures to keep them safe. As a result, they will be more motivated and productive.
NOTE: Risk assessment and mitigation tools, along with anti-hazing resources, are readily available through the PSE Headquarters office to assist you in fulfilling your duty of care.
Your Commitment:
Duty of care for my chapter… PSE leaders and members can demonstrate a duty of care for your chapter by knowing and maintaining effective chapter bylaws. The purpose of the bylaws is to guide the chapter’s actions and decisions. They help prevent or resolve conflicts and disagreements. They can protect the chapter from potential problems by clearly outlining rules around authority levels, rights, and expectations.
Duty of care for my school… Take the time to know and appreciate your campus and the guidelines and policies which have been developed to preserve the safety and well-being of all students.
Duty of care for my Fraternity… Protect PSE’s professional reputation and uphold the standards set forth for the common benefit of all. Each member’s duty of care will assure continuity of PSE as your business advantage for life.
